Estimating and Comparing Water Heating Costs

Before you purchase a water heater, it's a good idea to estimate its annual operating costs. Then, you can compare costs with other more or less energy-efficient models, types, or systems. You can also determine the energy savings and payback of the most energy-efficient model, which will probably have a higher purchase price.

Here you'll find information about how to estimate and compare costs for these systems:

To estimate and compare water heating costs, you need to know the following features of the water heater models:

If you want to include installation and maintenance costs, consult the manufacturer(s) and a qualified contractor to help estimate these costs. These costs will vary from water heater type and sometimes even from model to model.

To compare the costs of combination water and space heating systems—which include tankless coil and indirect water heaters, and some heat pump systems—consult the manufacturer(s) and a qualified plumbing and heating contractor.
