Program Impact:
Wyoming Rebates Bring Savings to Consumers, Sales to Retailers

Through the end of September 2010, Wyoming had issued nearly 2,500 rebates to consumers.

Through the end of September 2010, Wyoming had issued nearly 2,500 rebates to consumers.

Wyoming has a long history of producing oil and gas to meet the nation's energy needs. Thanks to the State Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program, Wyoming residents are saving energy with ENERGY STAR® qualified products. Wyoming is offering rebates of $50 to $250 for clothes washers, dishwashers, gas furnaces, and three kinds of water heaters, including solar. The state has issued nearly 2,500 rebates to consumers, totaling more than $230,000 as of September 30, 2010.

Many local retailers have benefited from increased sales due to the rebates. Tracey Wempen of Brown's Western Appliance in Worland notes that the rebates have encouraged customers to buy ENERGY STAR. She says customers are also taking advantage of clothes washer rebates offered by Rocky Mountain Power, a local electric utility, to increase their overall savings.

The rebate program has raised awareness of energy efficiency and ENERGY STAR beyond consumers, according to Heather Tupper at the Wyoming Business Council, which administers the program. "The rebate program gave this office a reason to talk with different organizations about energy efficiency." For example, "the utilities in Wyoming were very supportive of the program through their own newsletters and other communication with their customers."
