Program Impact:
Appliance Rebates + Tax Holiday = Vermont Success
Everyone likes a good deal, and Vermont residents are sure that they've gotten one by combining state appliance rebates with the state's tax holiday. Vermont rolled out its federally supported state appliance rebate program March 6, the same day the annual sales tax holiday began. One day later, 80% of the rebate funds were spoken for.
"Our sales tax holidays always generate a lift in sales," says Michael Russom, retail efficient market projects manager for Efficiency Vermont. "People feel like they are somehow beating the system by combining the tax holiday with rebates," which has generated extra traffic in stores.
Retailers knew about the program in advance and some used layaway programs to boost sales. Come opening day, customers completed layaways and walked off with rebate application forms.
Products eligible for rebates include refrigerators, clothes washers, gas tankless water heaters, gas furnaces, and gas boilers. Rebates range from $75 to $150 and will last until funds run out.
