THIS PROGRAM IS CLOSED AS OF NOVEMBER 30, 2011.

The Territory of the U.S. Virgin Islands implemented a mail-in rebate program to help residents replace older, inefficient appliances with new ENERGY STAR® qualified appliances. The program began February 1, 2010; additional products were added November 22, 2010. The program closed on November 30, 2011.

Eligible products included

  • Refrigerators
  • Freezers
  • Dishwashers
  • Room Air Conditioners
  • Gas Tankless Water Heaters
  • Air source heat pumps
  • Geothermal heat pumps

Consumers must provide proof that the freezers and/or dishwashers were replaced. The U.S. Virgin Islands Energy Office will hire contractors to handle all recycling services. These contractors will provide proof that the freezer and/or dishwasher was recycled. An additional recycling rebate is available for residents of St. John, St. Thomas, and Water Island to defray transportation costs.

NOTE: For questions about your rebate such as status, timeline, and rebate amount, please contact your state's program directly through their Web site.

Program Impact:
Virgin Islands Appliance Rebate Program Helps Residents Cut Electricity Costs

U.S. Electricity Costs.

Electricity costs almost four times more in the U.S. Virgin Islands than in the continental United States.

Residents of the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI), where the cost of electricity is almost four times the national average of the continental United States, are saving money with ENERGY STAR® qualified appliances—and with rebates of 30% off the purchase price up to $599. The State Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program began offering rebates in USVI on energy-efficient dishwashers, freezers, air source heat pumps, geothermal heat pumps, and tankless water heaters on February 1, 2010. Room air conditioners and refrigerators were added on November 22, 2010. The program will run until funds are depleted.

Retailers are also benefitting from the program. Patricia Lord, USVI’s rebate program administrator, reports that retailers have seen an increase in sales and deliveries since the program began.

Recycling is required for old air conditioners, dishwashers, freezers, and refrigerators. An additional $100 recycling rebate is available to residents of three islands (St. Thomas, St. John, and Water Island) to defray transportation costs.

“The program encourages residents to recycle old, inefficient appliances instead of keeping them or passing them on to someone else,” says Energy Operations Coordinator Leila Muller. “This is a great way to promote awareness and energy efficiency in the home.”
