Program Impact:
Thousands of Puerto Rican Families Invest in Energy Efficiency
Energy Affairs Administration Executive Director Luis Bernal Jiménez has led the effort to promote the State Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program in Puerto Rico.
Four thousand homes on the island of Puerto Rico have benefited from the $200 rebate offered by the government of Puerto Rico through the federal State Energy Efficiency Appliance Rebate Program. This program assigned to Puerto Rico about $3.7 million for discount vouchers on the purchase of ENERGY STAR® qualified refrigerators, freezers, clothes washers, dishwashers, room air conditioners, water heaters, and central air conditioners.
These 4,000 families are part of the first phase of the program that was launched February 24, 2010 and closed May 16. The program generated $2.1 million in appliance sales in more than 80 stores across the island, according to Derlin Joel Muñoz, communications director of the Puerto Rico Energy Affairs Administration, which administers the program.
"The program is an important step for the island, as it stimulates the development of a green economy, leads us into an energy-savings culture, and makes us contributors to our environment," said Luis Bernal, executive director of the Energy Affairs Administration. "Puerto Rico is committed to developing initiatives like this that will benefit our people, promote job growth, improve our economy, and protect the environment. Today thousands of Puerto Rican families are part of this great program."
Puerto Rico will launch the second phase of the program in November, during which residents will have access to 14,000 remaining vouchers. Muñoz expects that this phase will inject more than $8 million into the Puerto Rican economy.
