Appliance Rebates: Shot in the Arm for NY Retailers
May 5, 2010 – "How can you not feel good about helping people?" asked Adele Ferranti, Program Manager with the New York State Energy and Research Development Authority. Since New York's Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate program launched on February 12, state residents have received or reserved more than $15 million in rebates to help them purchase energy-efficient appliances. The rebates, which range from $50 to $555, are projected to help save residents $6 million in annual energy and water utility costs and $33 million over the lifetime of the products.
Ferranti says the rebates also have helped hundreds of retailers across the state, generating approximately $113 million in appliance sales. Many retailers have increased working hours for existing employees and have even hired temporary workers.
"The program was a real shot in the arm that the industry needed," said Kevin Lillie, of Olum's, a retailer in Vestal, New York. "During the first two weeks of the program, we had the largest orders in the company's entire history."
Ferranti attributes much of the program's success to the support of Gov. David Paterson, New York State's Congressional Delegation, as well as the cooperation among the New York State Retail Council, individual retailers, the Department of Public Service, and state utilities.
As of May 3, $1.6 million in rebates remain. "There is still time for people getting their tax refunds to take part in the program," Ferranti notes.

NY Appliance Rebate Program Rocks in New York
ENERGY STAR qualified appliances and the New York rebate program have been "good for business, good for putting money back into America's pockets, and without a doubt good for saving energy," says Mark Pusey of Charlotte Appliance.
Mark Pusey from Charlotte Appliance in Rochester, New York reports that the State's Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program was an unqualified success. On February 12, staff arrived at the store to find at least 50 people waiting in line for the store to open. From 7:00 a.m. opening day and continuing for the next 12 days, the store was busy all day long. Mark says that his four delivery trucks were on the road continuously, with deliveries well into March for many customers.
Charlotte Appliance credits some of the success to strategic promotions such as a major interstate billboard and TV and newspaper coverage leading up to the day of the launch. In addition, they stocked up with over 5,000 appliances. Sales for laundry appliances topped the list…the store sold over 500 sets!
New York launched its much-anticipated appliance rebate program with 67,000 calls to the hotline and many reports of stores experiencing "Black Friday" sale days. Customers purchased energy efficient refrigerators, freezers, washers, and dishwashers—appliances they needed to buy to get rebates from the state.
The state of New York will be administering well over a whopping $16.8 million for a projected 170,000 rebates.
The Department of Energy (DOE) provided consumer messaging and helped prepare the media and retailers in partnership with The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, which is administering the program.
Mark Pusey commented, "Buying energy efficient appliances and the DOE-managed rebate program are good for business, good for putting money back into America's pockets, and without a doubt good for saving energy!"
