Program Impact:
State Appliance Rebates Equal Record Sales, Happy Customers
Ralph Flood, an appliance buyer for Cowboy Maloney's Electric City, inspects the ENERGY STAR appliance line. Program launch day brought the highest sales in the store's 58-year history.
Rebates for the purchase of ENERGY STAR® qualified appliances have led to record sales in Mississippi. Since the launch of the federally supported rebate program in April, 2010, 34,000 ENERGY STAR qualified appliances have been purchased through Mississippi's "buy, then reserve" system.
"We've seen tremendous success," reports Karen Bishop of the Mississippi Development Authority. "Our program has run very smoothly and we're delighted by the results." The program provides rebates ranging from $50 to $150 on energy-efficient air conditioners, clothes washers, dishwashers, freezers, and furnaces.
Launch day brought the highest sales in Cowboy Maloney's Electric City's 58-year history. "The program has been fantastic," reports Eddie Maloney, president of the 12-store chain. Since July, Cowboy Maloney's has guaranteed rebates for customers when the store has mailed in the rebate application on their behalf. "We've left no stone unturned, making sure Mississippi residents are taken care of."
As of September 14, the more than 23,600 products rebated under Mississippi's program will reduce CO2 emissions by roughly 22,500 metric tons over the lifetime of the new appliances. That's the equivalent of taking 4,300 cars off the road for a year.
