Program Impact:
Louisiana Rebates Make Energy Efficient Appliances Affordable

ENERGY STAR qualified clothes washers

ENERGY STAR qualified clothes washers are one of eight products that Louisiana residents have received rebates on.

As part of the EmPower Louisiana program, state rebates have helped some residents buy energy efficient appliances that otherwise could not have afforded to. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, "a lot of people had to rebuild and replace appliances," comments Louis McArthur, program manager for EmPower Louisiana. "A lot of people who did buy ENERGY STAR® [this year] probably would not have bought it without the rebate."

The rebates range from $75 to $500 for ENERGY STAR qualified furnaces, heat pumps, and air conditioners, as well as refrigerators, freezers, clothes washers, dishwashers and water heaters.

"We had pretty generous rebates," McArthur says. "It stands as being one of our most successful programs. We're all happy about that."

The state opened the program in April, 2010 with $6.4 million, including $4.2 million from the U.S. Department of Energy and $2.2 million from a state grant. Residents must buy their appliance within 45 days of reserving the rebate or the reservation expires. So far, 20,482 residents have purchased an ENERGY STAR qualified appliance, and about 46,000 residents have registered for a rebate, but have not redeemed it yet.

The program taught some residents about the importance of recycling old appliances. The state requires all residents to recycle old appliances, but some people didn't know that before the rebate program started, McArthur says.
