Program Impact:
Idaho Rebates Put ENERGY STAR Within Range

Sometimes it just takes a little nudge to change minds. That's what's happening in Idaho, where all it took was the federally supported Idaho appliance rebate program to convince consumers to purchase ENERGY STAR appliances.
"The program is running really well," reports Stacey Donohue, program manager for the Idaho Office of Energy Resources. "Some Idaho retailers have reported huge sales. Residents also like our easy-to-use reservation process and appreciate the real-time updates."
Idaho's program, which launched on March 25, offers consumer rebates for a wide range of products, including refrigerators, clothes washers, dishwashers, room air conditioners, furnaces, boilers, heat pumps, and water heaters.
Kevin Pratley of Quality Heating and Cooling in Boise isn't waiting for his phone to ring. Instead, he is calling his customers to tell them about the new rebates. Several have taken advantage of the rebates and energy savings by purchasing qualified heat pumps, furnaces, and water heaters. Kevin reports that some customers weren't aware of ENERGY STAR appliances or would have gone with conventional equipment if it weren't for the rebates. Many customers have also boosted their savings by combining the state rebates with federal tax credits and manufacturer rebates on qualified products.

Idaho Appliance Rebates: "Worth Talking About"
On March 25, RC Willey began offering its customers state rebates on ENERGY STAR qualified appliances; sales more than doubled as a result.
Idaho retailer Todd Boothe, manager of the Boise RC Willey Store, knows how to make that trip to the store worthwhile for his customers! On March 25, appliance retailer RC Willey began offering its customers state rebates of $25 to $300 on ENERGY STAR qualified appliances, and sales have more than doubled as a result.
"Idaho rebates are worth talking about," says Todd Boothe, manager of the Boise store. "The rebate program has really been successful for us. Refrigerators have been the hottest seller, but clothes washers and dishwashers have also been flying off the showroom floor."
A terrific tactic that RC Willey used was having trained sales staff help customers register for the rebate at the register. "Our staff take care of everything so the customer doesn't have to go home and then figure out the reservation process," say Boothe. RC Willey also matches the state rebate with a store gift card.
RC Willey, which has 12 retail outlets in four Western states, has been heavily marketing appliance rebates with a TV, print, and radio campaign. Qualified products are also labeled, clearly showing the state rebate and matching store rebate.
In total, the state will be issuing $1,318,828 in rebates for ENERGY STAR qualified refrigerators, clothes washers, dishwashers, room air conditioners, water heaters, furnaces, boilers, and heat pumps. The program is administered by the Idaho Office of Energy Resources with funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
