Program Impact:
Phones "Ringing off the Hook" for Guam Appliance Rebates

Steven Muna, Guam Energy Office program manager, responds to rebate calls.

Steven Muna, Guam Energy Office program manager, has been responding to a large number of rebate calls.

Guam's Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program is off and running! Kicked off by Bradley Dunagan, deputy administrator of the Guam Energy Office during a press conference at the Governor's Office on December 6, 2010, Guam's rebate program has high hopes for success.

Guam's utility rate of $0.24 per kilowatt hour is more than twice the U.S. national average, so helping consumers shift to more energy-efficient appliances can really help. In total, a consumer who replaces their old refrigerator and room air conditioner with new ENERGY STAR models will end up saving over $500 on their power bill.

"The phones have been ringing off the hook," reports Steven Muna, Guam Energy Office program manager. "There is tremendous interest in this program from both the public and the media." All three of Guam's news channels ran stories about the program the night of the launch. The program has also been featured in several local papers and two radio ads also are helping to build awareness and excitement.

Steven says the program has created good partnerships with local retailers. "We are very pleased to have such wonderful retail partners working together to encourage the purchase of the energy and water-saving appliances." Eligible residents can receive rebates from $100 to $350 towards the purchase of ENERGY STAR qualified refrigerators, freezers, clothes washers, room air conditioners, and split central air conditioners.
