Program Impact:
DC Uses its Experience and Surrounding States to Successfully Launch its Appliance Rebate Program

DC residents can obtain rebates for refrigerators and other appliances purchased at DC and regional stores.

DC residents can obtain rebates for refrigerators, clothes washers, dishwashers, and electric heat pump water heaters purchased at DC and regional stores.

Washington DC's Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program was one of the most recent programs to start and has received great support from district residents who eagerly awaited its launch.

DC is fortunate to have previously run a rebate program in-house and brings a lot of knowledge to its current appliance rebate program. "We knew what to expect in terms of what consumers wanted, where they wanted to make their purchases, and what rebate levels were sufficient," said LaKeisha Smith, energy program specialist for the DC government.

There are only a few retail stores in the district where appliances can be purchased, so DC allowed residents to make their purchases from stores within the greater metro area. Appliances can be purchased anywhere, including Maryland and Virginia, as long as they are installed in a DC residence. This flexibility has allowed more retailers to participate and a greater selection for consumers.

The response from residents has been great, according to Smith. "People are excited that the program has finally launched and we've been getting calls daily," she noted. Previous experience with appliance rebate program management has helped DC put together a newsletter list sent to over 3,000 subscribers. Readers are alerted to program updates, rebate levels, and eligibility requirements.

The program has been open since October 25, 2010 and offers rebates on electric heat pump water heaters, refrigerators, dishwashers, and clothes washers in the range of $50 - $300. As of November 11, 2010, over 140 rebate applications have been received and over 35 rebates have been approved.
