Program Impact:
Historic Rebate Program Increases Appliance Sales, Recycling in American Samoa
Long-awaited appliance rebates have come just in time for American Samoans. In August, utility bills will go up significantly, making energy efficient ENERGY STAR qualified appliances an even more attractive purchase for the island's residents. Rebates ranging from $100 to $250 are now available on ENERGY STAR qualified freezers, refrigerators, clothes washers, and air conditioners.
But the rebates have done more than just make appliances more affordable. "This is a historic program for American Samoans," reports Malelega Tuiolosega, program manager for the American Samoa Territorial Energy Office (TEO). "Appliances are being properly recycled for the first time ever on island."
The TEO is working closely with the American Samoa Power Authority to ensure that used appliances are recycled appropriately. Island Technology, a local recycler, works with TEO to dispose of chemicals and oils according to federal guideline. ASPA then crushes and ships the the used appliances off island as scrap metal.
Retailers report that American Samoa's program has had a positive impact on businesses during tough economic times. Transpac, a local appliance retailer, is an active partner in the program.
"Residents have been waiting for a program like this for a long time," says Louis McGoon, sales manager of Transpac. "People are looking to take advantage of the energy savings."
