Program Impact:
Rebates Generate Soaring Sales for Alabama Retailers
Program Manager Karen Clifton highlights Alabama's appliance rebate program, which has given retailers a boost.
Alabama's rebate program for energy efficient appliances has been a boon for retailers in the state.
Karen Clifton, program manager for the Alabama Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program, confirms. "We have had some record sales [over the past six months]. One retailer told me he had the best week ever."
Dan Chavis, owner of Chavis Furniture and Appliance in Chickasaw, Ala., raves about the program: "They hit the nail on the head. I can't say enough about it. It reached a lot of people. As a result, my business is up 50 percent. It has truly been a good stimulus for the business. The state did all the right things."
Clifton reports that Alabama consumers have also benefitted from the program.
"The consumers got some really good deals," Clifton says. "Some people I talked to really needed the rebate. They were happy to purchase an energy efficient appliance."
The program started in April, 2010 with $4.1 million available for rebates. A little over $1 million remains. During the first week of September, the state kicked off a second round of promotions. "A lot of people who initially reserved never filed claims," Clifton says. "We'll keep it open until all the funds are expended."
As of August 31, residents had bought 18,981 ENERGY STAR® qualified appliances, representing $14.4 million in retail sales. Rebates range from $25 for room air conditioners to $150 for refrigerators, and also apply to ENERGY STAR qualified dishwashers, freezers and clothes washers. The top two sellers have been refrigerators and clothes washers.
